BRITTLE FRACTURE

At least an explanation for brittle fractures: a paper describes some brittle fracture failure modes of composite polymer insulators. Moisture ingress together with unreacted hardener in the epoxy resin may produce the acid at the origin of brittle fractures.
Our comment: with this knowledge, brittle fractures can be avoided on new manufactures.
